Online translation tools and Dweller

Quite a while back I added support for localization of Dweller and added Swedish as a proof of concept that it actually works. What I didn't do was to make it easy for external translators to help out. Until now the translations have been kept in an XML file and parsed build time into a binary file format. It would quickly become unmanageable to pass around XML files and keep them up to date for all languages.

At work we've more or less always worked with multi-lingual games and apps and we have with great success used online translation tools developed in-house to take care of the hassle of maintaining multiple languages. I could probably use the tools we have at work, but for Dweller I think it's better to find a similar solution available for free on the net. To my surprise there were quite a few tools with similar feature set as the one we use at work.

After a bit of evaluation I decided to go for myGengo String. myGengo offer professional translation services to a multitude of languages at a reasonable price and they also have a very nice free to use (at least for public projects) translation tool where you can define what languages your project should support (and which language should be the master language), add strings to translate, invite translator, see the status of the translations and finally export them to a number of different file formats. If you want to help out with the translation of Dweller please send me an e-mail!

  8. Yes but I'm not sure to have the plural and singular the right place. Could you summarize in the order you need to? Thank you in advance.

PS : I think that this message contains lots of English errors. Sorry :S

  9. When it comes to items (ITEM_DAGGER etc) and monsters (CREATURE_GOBLIN) the format is as follows:

Singular (used in the inventory list)|Plural (used in the inventory list)|Singular indefinite (eg "You see a Dagger")|Singular definite (eg "The Dagger begins to glow")|Singular possessive

  11. By the way, found some bugs in 1.15.0:
    - monster's health bar doesn't display correct. It looks like monster's hp is equal character's hp.
    - "This is artifact Quarterstaff 'Ekaqo'. IT CAN DAMAGE ENEMIES. IT CAN DAMAGE ENEMIES. It requires both hands to use..."
Your last post is very useful, but can you exemplify of using Singular possessive?

  12. @Johnbrown: You came across an item that got two damage effects. That quarterstaff should do quite a bit of damage. I should probably prevent duplicates on generated artifacts.

Singular possessive is probably not used for items, but it should be used for creatures "The Goblin's Mace". Let me check when I'm home and can have a look at the code.

  13. Bubus, my friend who present dweller to me and who help to translate want to know if he can create his artifact. :D
According to your example, I think my translation is right. Thank you. I continue this as soon as possible.

  15. Hello, we have a problem : in French the singular possessive isn't look like in English. In English, there is "the Goblin's buckler" but in French, there is "the buckler of Goblin" ("Le bouclier du Gobelin"). We want to know if you can change order of vocable.

  16. I had a look at where the singular possessive form is used and it is currently only used in two places:

EFFECT_MELEE_DODGE_TARGET = You dodge @0 attack (You dodge the Goblin's attack)
EFFECT_MELEE_SHIELD_TARGET = You block @0 attack with your shield (You block the Goblin's attack with your shield)
EFFECT_DAMAGE_UNHARMED_TARGET = You are unharmed by @0 attack (You are unharmed by the Goblin's attack)

You are free to move the @0 in the French text for the above three keys (or any keys for that matter).

I had a look at the French translation of EFFECT_MELEE_DODGE_TARGET. It is currently set to "Vous esquivez l'attaque de @0". Should the 'de' really be there? The @0 will be replaced with the singular possessive form (du Goebelin). "Vous esquivez l'attaque de du Goebelin" should probably be "Vous esquivez l'attaque du Goebelin".

Please let me know if I didn't explain this in a good way!
